Jollibee-Style Garlic Pepper Beef

Beef & Garlic

  • 1.5 lbs beef chuck, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 12 cloves garlic, finely chopped

Marinade

  • 3 Tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 Tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 Tbsp black pepper
  • 1 Tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp sugar

Cream Sauce

  • 1 cup mushrooms (any kind), chopped
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 beef bouillon cube
  • 1 tsp soy sauce, or to taste
  • 1 Tbsp black pepper, or to taste
  • Kosher salt, to taste

Directions

  • Toast the garlic: In a cold pan, add the chopped garlic and enough oil to cover. Slowly heat over low, stirring until golden brown. Strain and set aside the garlic, reserving 3 Tbsp of the garlic oil.
  • Marinate the beef: Combine the sliced beef with all the marinade ingredients. Mix well and let it rest for at least 15 minutes.
  • Pre-cook the beef: Boil 6 cups of water. Blanch the marinated beef in batches for 1 minute each, then set aside.
  • Make the sauce: In a pan over medium heat, add 3 Tbsp of the garlic oil. Toast 1 tsp black pepper, then add the mushrooms and saute for 5 minutes. Add the pre-cooked beef, water, cream, bouillon cube, soy sauce, additional pepper, and salt. Stir in half of the toasted garlic and simmer for 5 to 8 minutes until thickened to a gravy-like consistency.
  • Serve: Spoon over steamed white rice and top with the remaining toasted garlic.
