Gruyere Crusted Onion Bites w/ Bloomin’ Onion Sauce

For the Onions

  • 2 small sweet onions, sliced thin
  • 1 x 6 oz block Le Gruyere, grated
  • 3/4 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 tsp all-purpose seasoning blend
  • 2 tbsp olive oil

For the Dipping Sauce

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 heaping tsp ketchup
  • 1/2 lemon, juiced
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 pinch oregano
  • 1 pinch cayenne
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions

  • Preheat the oven to 400F.
  • Spread the grated Le Gruyere on a nonstick baking sheet and top with the onion slices (about 9, depending on size).
  • In a bowl, stir together the panko, seasoning and olive oil, then distribute evenly over the onions.
  • Bake for 25 minutes, until the Gruyere is golden brown and lacy at the edges.
  • Meanwhile, mix all the dipping sauce ingredients and season with salt and pepper; let it sit.
  • Let the cheese crust rest 5 minutes, then cut into bite-sized pieces. Serve with the dipping sauce.
